Chapter 5: The Will

### Chapter 5: The Will
The ambulance sped through the evening traffic.
Its siren echoed across the quiet streets.
Inside...
Sarah lay strapped securely to the stretcher.
One hand rested protectively over her stomach.
The other still held the repaired ultrasound Arthur had carefully taped back together before the paramedics left.
Every few minutes...
Her daughter kicked.
Each tiny movement eased another layer of fear.
Across from her, Arthur sat quietly.
He had insisted on riding with her.
Not as an employee.
As family.
The young paramedic smiled after checking the fetal monitor again.
"Your little girl has quite a strong heartbeat."
Sarah smiled weakly.
"She's stubborn."
Arthur chuckled softly.
"I think she gets that from her mother."
For the first time that day...
Sarah laughed.
Only for a second.
But it was real.
---
Back at the Vance mansion...
Crime scene investigators photographed every corner of the second-floor landing.
The broken railing bore fresh scratches where Sarah's sweater had caught during the fall.
Small pieces of the torn ultrasound still rested beneath the staircase.
Evidence markers covered the marble floor.
Outside...
Guests continued gathering behind the police tape.
News vans had begun arriving.
Camera crews pointed their lenses toward the mansion.
One reporter spoke into a microphone.
"Authorities have arrested prominent philanthropist Eleanor Vance following allegations that she pushed her pregnant daughter-in-law from the second-floor landing of the family's historic estate."
The story spread within minutes.
Across television.
Across social media.
Across every local news station.
The Vance family name had become breaking news.
---
Inside the sheriff's vehicle...
Eleanor sat in handcuffs.
She stared out the window without speaking.
Her lawyer, Richard Collins, finally answered her call.
"Eleanor?"
"You need to get me out."
"What happened?"
"It's all lies."
Richard remained silent.
Then said carefully,
"The television says there are multiple witnesses."
"They're mistaken."
"It also says someone recorded you."
Eleanor's breathing slowed.
For the first time...
She realized this would not disappear with money.
---
Meanwhile...
At County Memorial Hospital...
Doctors completed Sarah's examination.
The ultrasound monitor showed a healthy baby.
No placental separation.
No internal bleeding.
Only severe bruising across Sarah's back and shoulder.
Dr. Evans smiled reassuringly.

"You and your daughter were incredibly lucky."
Sarah looked down.
"No."
She whispered.
"We were protected."
Her eyes drifted toward Arthur.
He simply lowered his head.
---
An hour later...
A familiar face entered Sarah's hospital room.
Mrs. Penelope Hargrove.
Still wearing her housekeeping uniform.
She held a large leather folder tightly against her chest.
Arthur stood immediately.
"Mrs. Hargrove."
She nodded politely.
"I came as soon as the police released me."
Sarah smiled softly.
"You didn't have to."
"Yes."
Penelope answered.
"I did."
She placed the folder on the bedside table.
"It belonged to Mr. James Vance."
Sarah frowned.
"My father-in-law?"
Penelope nodded.
"He gave it to me six months before he died."
Arthur looked surprised.
"I never knew."
"Because he made me promise."
She carefully opened the folder.
Inside rested a sealed envelope.
Across the front...
Written in elegant handwriting...
Were seven simple words.
To be opened only if Sarah is harmed.
Sarah's heart skipped.
Arthur slowly sat down.
Penelope looked at Sarah.
"He feared something like this."
Sarah stared at the envelope.
"No..."
she whispered.
"He couldn't have."
Penelope smiled sadly.
"Oh..."
"He knew much more than people realized."
With trembling hands...
Sarah broke the wax seal.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
And another document.
A legal document.
Arthur unfolded it first.
His eyes widened.
He immediately looked back at Sarah.
"What is it?"
He swallowed.
"It's an amendment to James Vance's will."
Sarah blinked.
"I don't understand."
Arthur continued reading.
"The amendment was signed two years before his death."
"He transferred controlling ownership of the Vance Estate..."
His voice stopped.
Sarah's breathing quickened.
"To whom?"
Arthur looked directly into her eyes.
"To you."
Silence.
Complete silence.
Penelope nodded.
"Mr. Vance never trusted Eleanor with the estate."
"He believed she loved power more than family."
Sarah shook her head repeatedly.
"There must be some mistake."
Arthur handed her the document.
There...
Stamped by the court.
Signed by witnesses.
Signed by James himself.
Every major family asset...
The mansion.
The charitable foundation.
The investment accounts.
The vineyards.
Everything.
Would legally belong to Sarah...
The moment Eleanor was convicted of committing violence against another family member.
A condition no one had known existed.
Not even Eleanor.
Sarah covered her mouth.
"He knew..."
Penelope nodded.
"He always worried that one day she would hurt someone."
Arthur slowly leaned back.
"In all my years working for him..."
"I've never seen anything like this."
Penelope reached into the folder once more.
"There is one more thing."
She handed Sarah another envelope.
Smaller.
Much older.

"This one is addressed to your daughter."
Sarah looked confused.
"But..."
"She's not even born."
"I know."
Penelope smiled through tears.
"Mr. Vance wrote it after learning you were pregnant."
Sarah stared at the envelope.
Across the front...
In James Vance's handwriting...
Were the words:
For my granddaughter... when she is old enough to understand what courage looks like.
Tears filled Sarah's eyes.
She had spent months believing...
She was alone.
Unwanted.
Disposable.
Now...
She realized someone had been protecting her all along.
Even after death.
Arthur quietly looked out the hospital window.
Far below...
Reporters were already gathering outside.
Tomorrow...
The world would learn about Eleanor's arrest.
But they had no idea...
The greatest surprise was still hidden inside James Vance's final wishes.
And somewhere across town...
Inside her jail cell...
Eleanor Vance had not yet discovered...
May you like
That she no longer owned the empire she had tried to kill for.
To be continued...
