Chapter 59: The Delta Sanctuary

Chapter 59: The Delta Sanctuary
Four months later. The Mekong Delta, Vietnam.
The air was thick with the scent of river mud, crushed lemongrass, and tropical rain. A small wooden house on stilts stood at the edge of a dense mangrove forest, hidden from the main river channels.
Sarah—now living under the local name An—walked down to the wooden dock, holding nine-month-old Hope in a traditional cloth sling. Her skin was tan from the sun, her hands calloused from working the local fish traps. She looked like just another mother surviving in the delta.
Arthur was under the stilt house, repairing the engine of an old wooden longtail boat. He looked thinner, his military frame hidden beneath a simple linen shirt, but his eyes were constantly scanning the river line.

"The evening boats are coming in, Sarah," Arthur said, wiping the grease from his hands. "Thomas sent a package through the local courier. A real birth certificate for Hope. Clean records from a clinic in Hanoi."
Sarah sat on the edge of the dock, letting her feet dangle into the warm river water. For the first time in her life, the silence didn't feel dangerous. It felt real.
"She’s crawling now, Arthur," Sarah smiled, watching Hope reach for a stray lotus flower floating near the wood. "She doesn't look like a Vance anymore. She just looks like herself."

Arthur walked up onto the dock, his hand instinctively resting on his hip where he still carried his Sig Sauer. "You did it, Sarah. You beat them. You broke the machine."
Sarah looked out at the setting sun, painting the delta in shades of deep orange and crimson. "We broke their money, Arthur. But men like Julian... men like Leo... they don't stop just because they're poor."
