Chapter 16: The Ash and the Cry

Chapter 16: The Ash and the Cry

The smell of premium gasoline was the last thing Thomas Hale’s farmhouse ever knew.
A single match dropped. The explosion didn't just burn the old wood; it blew the front windows straight out into the yard, raining fire onto the gravel where Sarah’s car had sat only hours before.
From the treeline, the man with the gas can watched the roof collapse into a roaring orange maw. He pulled out a encrypted satellite phone.
"The safehouse is gone," the man said. "No traces left of James’s files if Thomas kept copies there."
"And the brother?" the cold voice on the other end asked.
"He’s at the hospital with Arthur. They’re entirely focused on the delivery room."
A low, humorless chuckle vibrated through the receiver. "Perfect. Let them celebrate the birth. It makes the mourning so much sharper."
Thirty miles away, inside the dimly lit, smoke-damaged delivery room of County Memorial Hospital, the fire was of a completely different nature.
Sarah’s knuckles were white. She was gripping Arthur’s hand so tightly that his fingers were turning purple, but he didn't flinch. Not once.
"One more push, Sarah! Just one more!" Dr. Emily Carter’s voice was fierce, cutting through the low hum of the vibrating emergency generators that had finally kicked in.
"I can't!" Sarah sobbed, her face drenched in a mix of sweat and tears. "Arthur, I can't do this, there's too much... there's too many people trying to—"
"Look at me," Arthur interrupted, his voice dropping into that granite-hard military register. He leaned so close she could see the reflection of her own terrified eyes in his. "The people outside this room do not matter. The board does not matter. Right now, it is just you and your daughter. Bring her home, Sarah."
With a raw, primal scream that tore from the depths of her chest, Sarah pushed.
For a terrifying three seconds, the room fell dead silent.
Then, it shattered.

A sharp, angry, beautiful cry pierced the air.
Dr. Carter let out a breathless laugh, holding up a tiny, squirming, fiercely vocal miracle. "It's a girl. Eight months early, but she’s got the lungs of a giant."
Sarah collapsed back onto the pillows, a sob of pure, unadulterated relief escaping her lips as the nurses quickly wrapped the baby in a warm blanket and laid her directly onto Sarah's chest.
"Look at her," Sarah whispered, her trembling fingers tracing the baby's impossibly soft cheek. "Arthur, look at her..."
Arthur stood over them, his broad shoulders finally relaxing, a rare, genuine smile breaking across his scarred face. But as he looked at the tiny child, his eyes caught the baby's right foot.
He froze.
There, perfectly matching the torn piece of the ultrasound Sarah had clutched on the marble floor of the Vance mansion, was a tiny, distinctively shaped birthmark right on the heel.
"She's beautiful, Sarah," Arthur murmured.
The door clicked open. Sergeant Reyes stepped in, her face grimed with smoke from the corridor encounter. She didn't say a word; she just looked at Arthur and gave a slight, heavy jerk of her head.
Step outside.
Arthur gently let go of Sarah’s hand, whispered a reassurance, and stepped into the hallway.
"What is it, Angela?" Arthur asked, the warmth instantly draining from his voice.
Reyes held up her phone. On the screen was a live dispatch photo of a blazing inferno.
"Thomas’s farm," Reyes said quietly. "Arson. They used military-grade accelerant. It’s completely leveled, Arthur. If your brother or Sarah had been within a mile of that place..."
Arthur’s jaw clenched until the bone throbbed. "They’re burning down the board. Eliminating every piece of high ground we have."
"It gets worse," Reyes said, lowering her voice further. "We ran the ID card of Daniel Mercer—the guy who dropped from the ceiling vent. He’s not a contract killer, Arthur. He’s ex-Special Ops, currently hired as 'private asset protection' for a shell corporation."
"Let me guess," Arthur said, his eyes darkening. "Who owns the shell corporation?"
Reyes looked toward the delivery room window, where Sarah was holding her baby.

"Vance Global Logistics," Reyes whispered. "The CEO signed his paycheck last Tuesday. The person who ordered the hit on Sarah... is the same person currently sitting on the throne of James's entire corporate empire."
