Chapter 32: The Phantom Lineage

The tires of a stolen local delivery van squealed as Arthur threw the vehicle onto the highway heading north toward the marshes.
Sarah sat in the back, cleaning a stray smudge of flour off baby Hope’s cheek. Her hands were shaking, but her eyes were cold. The frightened waitress from the Vance estate was gone; a mother who had looked into the abyss had taken her place.
"You said my father is alive," Sarah said, her voice cutting through the roar of the engine. "Thomas Sterling died of a heart attack when I was four. I saw the grave in Columbus."
"You saw a stone, Sarah," Arthur said, his eyes tracking the rearview mirrors. "Thomas Sterling faked his death twenty years ago with the help of James’s father. The Vance family used the Sterling fortune to buy their way into the global logistics market. In exchange, they gave your father a new identity, a clean record, and absolute anonymity in South America."
"Then why come back now?"
"Because Julian destroyed the Vance network," Arthur explained, turning onto a dirt road flanked by towering weeping willows. "As long as the Vance empire stood, the Sterling money was safe, laundered through their offshore foundations. When you pulled that lever in the Toledo vault, you didn't just crash Julian's servers. You exposed your father's hidden multi-billion-dollar accounts to the federal government."

Arthur stopped the van beneath the shadow of an abandoned shrimping dock. He turned to face her.
"He's not coming to Savannah to give you a family reunion, Sarah. He’s coming because the biometric key inside Hope’s DNA is the only thing that can re-encrypt those accounts before the FBI seizes them permanently. To Thomas Sterling, you aren't his daughter. You're the woman holding his vault combination."
