Chapter 57: The Fall of the King

Leo looked at the dead screens. The Vance empire, the Sterling fortune, The Consortium—everything he had faked his death to inherit—had been reduced to nothing but scrap metal.

With a guttural scream, he raised his weapon, aiming it straight at Sarah’s chest.

BANG!

The shot didn't come from Leo.

Thomas Sterling stepped into the vault from a secondary emergency exit, his clothes torn, his face covered in soot. He had crawled through the maintenance shafts to find his daughter. His heavy caliber bullet caught Leo clean in the shoulder, spinning him around and sending him crashing into the burning server racks.

"Sarah... get out..." Sterling gasped, his chest heaving as the server core began to explode in a chain reaction of electrical fire.

Arthur Hale stumbled into the room, using his rifle as a crutch. He grabbed Sarah’s arm, pulling her toward the emergency exit. "The mountain is venting the electrical fire! We have sixty seconds before the air in this shaft turns to pure carbon monoxide!"

Sarah looked back one last time. Her father, Thomas Sterling, and her husband, Leo Vance, were locked in a desperate, final struggle on the floor of the burning vault, two ghosts of old money tearing each other apart as the roof began to collapse.

Arthur pulled her through the heavy fire doors just as the Geneva Core blew, a massive wall of blue fire sealing the vault forever.
