Chapter 25: The First National Vault

The interior of the First National Bank of Toledo was dead silent at 3:00 AM.
The emergency lights cast a pale green glow over the massive brass-bound vault doors in the basement. Arthur pushed the heavy security door open, his shoulder bleeding from a grazing bullet wound he had taken during the escape from the ditch. Mercer hadn't made it out of the woods. He had stayed behind to buy them ninety seconds.
Thomas Hale was already there, having driven ahead on Arthur’s encrypted coordinates. He stood by the vault control panel, a laptop hooked into the bank’s mainframe.
"The board is looping the security cameras, Arthur," Thomas said, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "We have five minutes before the state police arrive on a domestic terrorism report filed by Julian’s legal team."
Sarah sat on a marble bench, rocking Hope. Mrs. Hargrove was in the front seat of Thomas’s truck upstairs, receiving medical attention from a private doctor Arthur trusted.
"Sarah," Arthur said, kneeling in front of her. His face was covered in mud and dried blood. "The key isn't a physical key. James didn't leave a piece of brass for this vault. He left a genetic sequence."
Sarah looked up, confused. "What?"
Thomas pointed to a small silver terminal beside the vault lever. "It’s a biometric lock installed by Thomas Sterling thirty years ago. It requires the DNA of a direct descendant to unlock the primary ledger. James married Leo to you because he needed the Sterling bloodline to merge with the Vance trust to keep Julian from legally dismantling the foundation."

Sarah felt a cold wave of realization wash over her. My whole marriage... my whole life... was a corporate strategy?
"Did Leo know?" Sarah whispered, her voice breaking. "Did my husband know?"
Arthur looked away. The silence was his answer.
"He loved you, Sarah," Arthur said softly. "But yes. He knew."
Sarah let out a bitter, hollow laugh. She stood up, her legs shaking, and walked toward the biometric terminal. She placed her trembling thumb onto the glass scanner.
A sharp chime echoed through the vault.
