Chapter 26: The Sterling Ledger

Chapter 26: The Sterling Ledger

Inside the vault sat no gold, no stacks of cash. Just a single, high-density server tower blinking with blue fiber-optic lights and a stack of leather-bound diaries belonging to Thomas Sterling.
Thomas Hale plugged his drive into the server. "My God... Arthur, look at this."
The screen illuminated with millions of transactions dating back to 1999. It wasn't just a record of corporate raids. It was a list of names. Every politician, every judge, every federal agent who had taken money from the Vance-Sterling merger.
But at the bottom of the ledger was a file marked: Project Cradle.
Arthur leaned closer, his eyes narrowing. "Open it."
The file contained medical records from a private facility in Switzerland. Sarah’s eyes scanned the dates. It was twenty-four years ago—the year she was born.
"Sarah," Thomas Hale said quietly, his voice full of dread. "Thomas Sterling didn't lose his fortune to the Vances. He gave it to them. He traded his entire empire to James’s father in exchange for an experimental genetic treatment."
Sarah frowned, clutching Hope tighter. "Treatment for what?"
"For a congenital heart defect," a voice boomed from the vault entrance.

Julian Vance walked into the basement, flanked by four men wearing federal badges. But these weren't real agents; they were Julian’s personal security force dressed in tactical gear. In Julian’s hand was the black remote control, its light now glowing a steady, dangerous red.

"You see, Sarah," Julian said, his smile sharp as a razor. "Your father was a monster, but he loved his little girl. You were born dying. James’s father owned the patent on the only gene therapy that could save you. The price? The Sterling empire."
Julian looked at baby Hope. "But the therapy had a side effect. It altered the maternal DNA line. Your daughter isn't just a Vance or a Sterling. She carries the synthesized genetic sequence that controls the encryption keys to every offshore account owned by Vance Global. She isn't an heir, Sarah. She is the password."
