Chapter 20: The Cliffhanger

The room became impossibly cold. The only sound was the furious lashing of the rain against the fifty-story glass windows.

Arthur’s hand remained perfectly steady, the barrel of his Glock pointed dead-center at Julian’s heart, but inside, a chasm had just opened up.

"You're lying," Arthur said, his voice flat, dangerously calm. "I knew James for over two decades. He didn't keep secrets from me."

"James kept secrets from everyone, Arthur. It was his superpower," Julian sneered, his fingers hovering inches above the black remote control. "Why do you think he insisted on a locked-down, private safehouse for her? Why do you think Eleanor hated her the moment she walked through the door? It wasn't because Sarah was poor. It was because Eleanor recognized the bloodline."

Julian took a step closer, his silver Vance ring catching the flash of lightning outside. "Her real name isn't Sarah Collins. Her father was Thomas Sterling. Does that name ring a bell, Colonel Hale?"

Arthur’s breath caught in his throat.

Sterling. The corporate raider who had driven James’s father to suicide twenty-five years ago. The man who had systematically dismantled the original Vance foundation, leaving a trail of bodies and bankruptcies across the Midwest before vanishing entirely.

"James found the daughter," Julian whispered venomously. "He didn't marry her off to his son to protect her from us. He did it to keep her close. To keep the Sterling assets hidden under the Vance umbrella. She is a Trojan horse, Arthur. And that baby she just gave birth to? That child carries the blood of the two most ruthless financial monsters this country has ever seen."

Down in the hospital basement, Sarah was sitting upright in the secure room.

The room was quiet, lit only by the soft glow of the neonatal bassinet. Baby Hope was sleeping peacefully, her tiny chest rising and falling.

Sarah reached into her pocket, her fingers brushing against a small, crumpled piece of paper she had slipped out of James’s final letter before Arthur could see it. It was a section of the letter she hadn't read aloud to the group.

With trembling hands, she smoothed out the paper under the dim light.

James’s words stared back at her:

Sarah, if they ever discover who your father was, they will come for you with the full force of the law. I have hidden the keys to the Sterling accounts in the place where we first met. Do not trust Arthur if he finds out. He served my father first, and he will choose the Vance legacy over your survival.

A single tear fell from Sarah's eye, smudging the ink on the page. She looked at her daughter, her heart shattering into a million pieces.

"I'm sorry, Hope," she whispered into the dark room. "I'm so sorry."

Back in the high-rise office, Julian watched Arthur’s eyes widen. He knew he had struck oil.

"So, what's it going to be, Colonel?" Julian smiled, his thumb firmly touching the button on the remote. "You shoot me, the file uploads, and Sarah spends the rest of her life in a federal women's correctional facility while her baby becomes a ward of the state. You let me walk out of here with the trust documents, and I keep her secret. We both win."

Arthur’s jaw tightened.

Outside, the storm reached its crescendo. A massive bolt of lightning illuminated the office, casting long, monstrous shadows across the floor.

Arthur looked at Julian. He looked at the remote.

Then, his phone in his pocket began to vibrate.

It was a text message from Sergeant Reyes. It contained only four words:

Sarah took the baby.

Arthur’s eyes went wide. He looked up at Julian, who was smiling like a devil in the dark.

The elevator behind Arthur suddenly chimed. The doors began to slide open.

Arthur’s finger was on the trigger. Julian’s thumb was on the button. And thirty miles away, a mother and her newborn daughter were disappearing into a rain-slicked night, fleeing from both their enemies... and their protectors.

Who was stepping out of the elevator? Whose side was Arthur really on now? And where was Sarah running to?
