Chapter 8: The Hidden Camera

### Chapter 8: The Hidden Camera
The photograph changed everything.
Hospital security immediately sealed Sarah's room.
Every nurse.
Every orderly.
Every visitor who had entered the maternity wing during the previous two hours was identified and questioned.
Sergeant Reyes arrived within twenty minutes.
She slipped on a pair of latex gloves before examining the photograph.
"No fingerprints."
She looked inside the envelope.
"No note."
"No DNA that we can see."
Arthur frowned.
"So whoever delivered this knew exactly what they were doing."
Reyes nodded.
"This wasn't intimidation."
"It was a message."
Sarah sat quietly on the hospital bed.
The photograph still haunted her.
Not because of the words.
But because of the picture itself.
She stared at it again.
Her eyes slowly narrowed.
"Wait..."
Arthur looked over.
"What is it?"
Sarah pointed toward the background.
"This picture wasn't taken by us."
Arthur leaned closer.
Behind Sarah and her late husband...
The mansion's front garden stretched toward the iron gates.
The angle was wrong.
The photographer had been standing far away.
Hidden behind the hedges.
Watching them.
Sarah whispered,
"Someone was spying on us."
---
Later that afternoon...
Reyes returned to the Vance mansion.
Crime scene investigators were still collecting evidence.
Mrs. Hargrove greeted her at the front door.
"I've been expecting you."
Reyes smiled politely.
"I need access to every security recording from the past year."
Mrs. Hargrove hesitated.
"There may be a problem."
"What kind of problem?"
"The cameras around the front garden..."

"...never worked."
Reyes frowned.
"What do you mean they never worked?"
"They were disconnected years ago."
"By whose order?"
Mrs. Hargrove looked toward the grand staircase.
"Mrs. Vance."
---
Inside the mansion's security office...
Mr. Harlan sat with his attorney.
His employment had already been terminated.
He looked exhausted.
Reyes placed the old photograph on the desk.
"Have you ever seen this?"
Harlan studied it.
Then his expression changed.
"I remember that day."
Arthur, who had accompanied Reyes, stepped forward.
"You do?"
Harlan nodded slowly.
"It was taken during the family garden party."
"There were photographers everywhere."
Arthur shook his head.
"No."
He pointed toward the angle.
"This wasn't taken from the party."
Harlan looked again.
His face slowly lost color.
"Oh..."
He whispered.
"I know where this was taken."
Silence filled the room.
He pointed toward the western edge of the property.
"From the old gardener's cottage."
Arthur frowned.
"That building has been abandoned for years."
"Not exactly."
Harlan swallowed.
"Eleanor ordered us never to enter it."
---
An hour later...
Police officers forced open the locked cottage.
Dust covered the furniture.
Cobwebs filled the corners.
It appeared untouched.
Until Arthur noticed something.
Fresh footprints.
Someone had been there recently.
Reyes slowly walked toward the back room.
A heavy curtain covered the window.
She pulled it aside.
The view overlooked the mansion's front garden perfectly.
Exactly the angle shown in the photograph.
Arthur's stomach tightened.
"So this is where it was taken."
Reyes nodded.
Then she noticed something mounted near the ceiling.
"A camera."
Everyone looked up.

Hidden inside an old smoke detector...
Was a tiny surveillance camera.
Still connected.
Still recording.
The forensic technician carefully removed it.
"It's modern."
He said quietly.
"Installed within the last few months."
Arthur looked stunned.
"Someone has been watching this house..."
"...long after Eleanor's arrest."
---
Meanwhile...
At the county jail...
Eleanor sat alone in silence.
Richard Collins entered carrying another folder.
She didn't even look up.
"What now?"
Richard placed several photographs on the table.
Pictures of the hidden camera.
The abandoned cottage.
Police investigators.
Eleanor's eyes widened.
"I've never seen that camera."
Richard watched her carefully.
"I believe you."
She looked up.
"What?"
"I don't think you installed it."
Eleanor frowned.
"Then who did?"
Richard remained silent.
Finally he asked,
"Eleanor..."
"Has anyone ever been blackmailing you?"
Her breathing stopped.
Only for a second.
But Richard noticed.
"You hesitated."
Eleanor slowly looked away.
"There was..."
"A man."
Richard leaned forward.
"Who?"
"I never knew his real name."
"What did he want?"
"He always wanted information."
"What kind?"
She closed her eyes.
"About James."
"About the estate."
"About Sarah."
Richard's expression darkened.
"Why didn't you tell anyone?"
Eleanor laughed bitterly.
"Because I thought I was the one in control."
---
That evening...
Sarah was finally discharged from the hospital.
Doctors ordered complete bed rest.
Arthur insisted she stay somewhere safer than the mansion.
"I know a place."
He said.
"My brother owns a farmhouse thirty miles away."
"No one knows about it."
Sarah smiled thankfully.
"I'd like that."
As Arthur loaded her small suitcase into his truck...
Mrs. Hargrove quietly approached.
She handed him a sealed evidence bag.
"The police found this in James's private study."
Arthur looked inside.
A tiny brass key.
Attached to it...
A faded paper tag.

Written in James Vance's unmistakable handwriting were four simple words.
For Arthur. When needed.
Arthur stared at it.
"I've never seen this before."
Mrs. Hargrove smiled gently.
"Perhaps Mr. Vance knew one day..."
"...you would need it."
Arthur slipped the key into his pocket.
Neither of them noticed...
A man standing across the street.
Watching.
Inside his parked car...
The mysterious observer lowered a pair of binoculars.
He picked up his phone.
"They're leaving the hospital."
The familiar cold voice answered.
"And Arthur?"
"He has the key."
Several long seconds passed.
Then...
The voice spoke more quietly than before.
"So James really prepared for this."
The caller hung up.
The man started the engine.
He didn't follow Sarah.
He followed Arthur.
Because whatever that small brass key opened...
May you like
Might be more dangerous than anyone imagined.
To be continued...
