Eleanor turned her head and shot the older housekeeper a look of pure, lethal warning.
Maria froze in her tracks, tears instantly welling in her terrified eyes, her head dropping down in forced submission.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Chloe squeezed her eyes shut, fighting through the sharp, radiating pain in her lower back.
She was terrified to move, terrified to check if she was bleeding, terrified that the heavy impact had torn something vital inside her.
She forced her eyes open and looked up.
Eleanor was towering over her, her posture immaculate, her designer silk dress perfectly smooth.
The older woman looked down at Chloe as if she had just stepped in something vile on the sidewalk.
