Chapter 31 - The New Estate
Inside the Sterling mansion, the oppressive, museum-like atmosphere had been completely eradicated.
Chloe, now off strict bed rest but still taking it easy, walked slowly through the grand hallways. She wore a comfortable, soft cashmere sweater and flat, non-slip slippers.
She stopped in the grand parlor, looking at the exact spot where she had been thrown to the floor.
The heavy, dark velvet drapes had been removed entirely. The mahogany dining table had been replaced with a lighter, warmer oak table. The room didn't feel like an execution chamber anymore. It felt like a home.
"Mrs. Sterling?"
Thomas, the young footman, asked gently, stepping into the room holding a silver tray with a cup of warm tea.
"Are you alright? Do you need to sit?"
Chloe turned and offered him a bright, genuine smile.
"I am perfectly fine, Thomas. Thank you,"
Chloe said, taking the tea.
"And please, just call me Chloe."
"I couldn't possibly, ma'am,"
Thomas blushed slightly, bowing his head respectfully.

"We are just so incredibly happy to see you smiling again."
The staff no longer feared the matriarch's wrath. They operated out of genuine loyalty and affection for a woman who treated them like human beings. The estate was finally breathing.
