Chapter 21 - The Cinema of Truth

The silence in the grand parlor was absolute, heavy, and entirely suffocating.
The high-definition video played out on the massive twenty-foot wall in pristine, undeniable clarity. Because there was no audio, the sheer violence of the act seemed magnified a hundred times over.
Every member of the Sterling elite watched in paralyzed horror as the matriarch of their family, a woman who demanded perfect decorum and elegance, transformed into a monster before their very eyes.
They saw the brutal slap. They saw the violent, full-body heave as Eleanor yanked the specialized maternity chair out from under a heavily pregnant woman.
A collective, horrified gasp rippled through the room when Chloe’s body struck the marble floor on the screen.
Aunt Beatrice raised a trembling, jewel-encrusted hand to cover her mouth, her eyes wide with unadulterated shock. Uncle Julian, the family’s chief legal counsel, went entirely pale, the glass of expensive scotch in his hand shaking so violently that the amber liquid spilled over the rim and onto his Italian leather shoes.
They watched Eleanor kick the chair away. They watched her sneer down at a woman crying for her unborn child.
William stood perfectly still under the dimmed chandelier, his face carved from impenetrable granite.
"William,"
Eleanor breathed, her voice barely a cracked whisper.
"Turn that off."
William did not move. He let the video play until the exact moment his own recorded self opened the dining room doors, freezing the frame on Eleanor’s guilty, shocked expression.
"Turn the lights back on,"
May you like
William commanded quietly.
The laser projector powered down, and the crystal chandeliers flared back to full, blinding brilliance. The sudden light revealed a room full of people staring at Eleanor as if she were a venomous snake that had just slithered into their laps.
