Chapter 27 - The Morning After

The next morning, the sun rose over a fundamentally changed empire.
Dr. Evans walked into the hospital room, looking significantly more relaxed than the previous afternoon. He reviewed Chloe’s charts with a satisfied nod.
"The contractions have completely subsided, and the placental wall is perfectly stable,"
Dr. Evans announced warmly.
"You are a very lucky woman, Mrs. Sterling. We can discharge you by noon, provided you agree to strict bed rest for the next two weeks."
"I will personally ensure she doesn't lift a single finger,"
William promised, standing by the window.
When they arrived back at the estate, the difference in the atmosphere was staggering.
The heavy, oppressive gloom that usually permeated the grand foyer was entirely gone. The heavy velvet drapes had been pulled back, flooding the marble floors with bright, warm sunlight.
The entire household staff was lined up near the grand staircase.
They did not look terrified. They did not keep their eyes glued to the floor. As William carried Chloe through the front doors, the staff offered genuine, warm smiles.
"Welcome home, Mrs. Sterling,"
Maria said, stepping forward with a massive bouquet of fresh white peonies.
"We prepared the master suite exactly as you requested. The temporary anti-slip mats have been permanently bolted to every staircase in the house."
"Thank you, Maria,"

Chloe smiled, tears of pure gratitude welling in her eyes.
She wasn't just a guest in a hostile palace anymore. She was finally home.
