Chapter 12 - The Doctor's Verdict

Dr. Evans, the senior obstetrician, moved the wand carefully over Chloe’s gel-covered stomach.

"There,"

Dr. Evans finally said, his tense shoulders dropping a fraction of an inch.

"The heartbeat is strong. The baby is stable."

Chloe let out a ragged, weeping exhale, her free hand covering her mouth as tears spilled over her cheeks.

William leaned down, pressing his lips to Chloe’s forehead.

"You’re safe,"

William whispered, his voice dangerously low.

"A blunt force impact to the marble floor at this stage of pregnancy is catastrophic,"

The doctor stated clearly.

"If she had landed even slightly more forward, we would be looking at a full placental abruption. It cuts off the baby’s oxygen supply instantly."

William’s blood ran absolutely cold.

"If that had happened, I would likely be trying to save her life in an operating room right now, and you would be picking out a tiny coffin,"

Dr. Evans warned quietly.
