Chapter 25 - The Cold Cell

The county detention center was a bleak, miserable fortress of concrete and steel, a stark contrast to the silk sheets and crystal chandeliers Teresa was accustomed to.

Daniel sat in the sterile visitation room, separated from the inmate holding area by a thick pane of bulletproof glass.

The heavy steel door on the other side clicked open, and Teresa was escorted into the room by a female guard. She was wearing a faded, oversized orange jumpsuit. Her perfectly styled hair was matted, and her face looked aged, hollow, and furious.

She picked up the plastic telephone receiver on her side of the glass. Daniel picked up his.

"It took you long enough, Daniel,"

Teresa sneered, her voice dripping with arrogant, venomous entitlement.

"Call the family lawyers. This place is a filthy nightmare. I want my bail posted by noon."

Daniel stared at the woman who had given birth to him. He felt absolutely nothing. No anger, no sorrow, no filial duty. The emotional bond had been completely severed the moment she pressed the accelerator on that wet road.

"There are no lawyers coming for you, Teresa,"

Daniel replied, his voice terrifyingly calm.

"I froze your accounts. I stripped your executive rights. You have no money, and no one is going to post your bail."

Teresa’s arrogant facade cracked instantly. Her eyes widened in absolute shock.

"You cannot do this to me!"

Teresa shrieked into the phone, slamming her fist against the bulletproof glass.

"I am your mother! I built that empire for you!"
