Chapter 21 - The Sterile Sanctuary

The hospital room was a stark, brilliant white, smelling faintly of antiseptic and clean linens.

Valeria lay in the center of the mechanical bed, an IV line taped securely to the back of her bruised hand. The heavy, terrifying storm that had nearly claimed her life was raging outside, but the thick, soundproof glass of the private maternity suite reduced the thunder to a distant, muffled rumble.

Daniel sat in a plastic chair beside her, his posture rigid, refusing to let go of her hand. A white bandage covered the deep gash on his forehead where he had slammed into his steering wheel.

"Is the pain getting worse?"

Daniel asked, his voice raw and thick with exhaustion.

"No,"

Valeria whispered, her voice fragile but steady.

"The medication is helping. The baby is just kicking a lot."

Daniel leaned forward, resting his forehead gently against the edge of her mattress.

"I thought I was too late, Val. When I saw her accelerating toward you..."

Daniel choked on the words, unable to finish the sentence as a fresh wave of horror washed over him.

"But you weren't,"

Valeria said softly, reaching out with her free hand to stroke his dark hair.

"You saved us, Daniel. You threw your own life on the line to stop her."

"She is my mother,"

Daniel said, his voice dropping to a freezing, lethal whisper.

"I spent thirty years believing she was just a difficult, demanding woman. I never knew I was introducing a monster into your life."
