Chapter 19 - The Heartbeat

The flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers and ambulances flooded the dark highway, illuminating the carnage of the wreck.

Police officers immediately swarmed the scene, drawing their weapons as they approached Teresa. She did not resist. She stood perfectly still, offering her wrists to the officers with arrogant, chilling dignity as they locked the steel handcuffs into place.

Daniel did not watch his mother being dragged away. He stayed glued to Valeria’s side as the paramedics rushed over with a stretcher.

Inside the bright, dry ambulance, a paramedic quickly cut away Valeria’s ruined clothes and placed a fetal doppler monitor against her gel-covered stomach.

Daniel held her hand in a death grip, praying silently.

After a few agonizing seconds, a rapid, strong, beautiful swoosh-swoosh-swoosh sound filled the small cabin. The paramedic looked up and smiled warmly.

"The baby has a strong heartbeat,"

The medic confirmed.

"He is alive, and he is perfectly stable."
