Chapter 14 - Breaking the Cords

The driver’s side door of the SUV was kicked open from the inside.
Daniel stumbled out onto the road. A deep gash on his forehead was bleeding profusely, the warm blood mixing with the freezing rain blinding his vision.
He completely ignored the searing pain in his ribs and his head. He didn't even look toward his mother's wrecked car.
He sprinted unsteadily toward the center of the road, dropping hard to his knees beside his wife.

Daniel choked out, his hands shaking violently as he frantically tore at the thick ropes binding her wrists.
When the knots refused to give, he pulled a pocket knife from his console, slicing through the coarse fibers with desperate, manic energy.
