Chapter 44 - The Invisible Squeeze

The opening of the Aura flagship was a massive, highly publicized media spectacle. Silas Sterling stood on a glass stage, proclaiming the death of traditional hospitality and the birth of a flawless, artificial intelligence-driven future. Over the next month, the impact on the Grand Lawson was immediate and deeply alarming.
Sarah Jenkins, the General Manager of the New York flagship, walked into Emma’s office holding a red-lined quarterly report. The usual bright, unshakeable confidence in Sarah’s eyes was replaced by genuine anxiety.
"We’ve taken a massive hit, Emma," Sarah reported, placing the tablet on the desk. "Corporate bookings are down by eighteen percent. Aura is undercutting our group rates so drastically that even our most loyal corporate clients are jumping across the street to save their quarterly budgets. The algorithms over there are dynamically adjusting prices by the minute."
Emma reviewed the numbers. It was a brutal financial bleeding. Silas was utilizing his massive venture capital war chest to absorb staggering losses, purely to suffocate the Grand Lawson’s cash flow.
"Our board of directors called me this morning," Daniel added, stepping into the office. "Even our ethical investors are getting nervous. They are gently suggesting that we might need to initiate a round of localized layoffs to remain competitive with Aura’s zero-labor model."
"Absolutely not," Emma stated, slamming her hand flat on the desk. Her voice was uncompromising. "The moment we fire a single housekeeper or bellhop to appease a profit margin, Silas wins. He proves that our humanity is conditional. We do not cut our staff. We double down on them."
"Emma, we are bleeding millions," Daniel warned softly.

"I know," Emma replied, her eyes flashing with a brilliant, dangerous light. "But Silas is selling a lie. A massive, glass tower run by a machine cannot possibly deliver true luxury. It’s a sterile illusion. Before we figure out how to fight him, I need to know exactly what is happening inside that building."
Emma stood up and grabbed her trench coat. "I am going to book a room at Aura. It’s time I met the algorithm face-to-face."
