Chapter 14 - The Smear Campaign

A few weeks later, the story of the confrontation in the lobby had spread throughout the organization. Employees admired Emma’s courage. Managers nervously highlighted her actions during staff meetings, desperate to align themselves with the new corporate mandate of "respect above all." Emma had officially started the leadership program, trading her maid's uniform for a tailored professional suit.

But Victoria Vance was not a woman who accepted defeat gracefully. Stripped of her elite status and deeply humiliated, she sought revenge.

Victoria leveraged her immense social media following and her connections in the tabloid press. She launched a coordinated, vicious smear campaign against the Lawson Hotel Group and, specifically, against Emma.

Articles began appearing online with aggressive headlines: Billionaire Hotel Chain Covers Up Assault by Unhinged Maid.

Victoria posted tearful videos claiming she was the true victim, asserting that a violent employee had attacked her unprovoked, and that Daniel Lawson had abused his power to protect a dangerous worker. She hired bots to tank the hotel’s online reviews and pressured her wealthy friends to cancel their upcoming galas at the property.

Emma sat in her new, small office on the administrative floor, staring at her computer screen in horror. Victoria had dug up Emma’s background, mocking her modest upbringing and falsely claiming Emma had a history of violent behavior.

"She's destroying everything," Emma whispered, tears of frustration stinging her eyes. She felt a familiar, crushing wave of powerlessness. She was just a former maid; how could she possibly fight a billionaire heiress in the court of public opinion?

The phone on her desk rang. It was Daniel Lawson.

"Emma," Daniel's voice was remarkably calm. "Come down to the main conference room immediately. We have a situation to handle."
