Chapter 43 - The Ex-Convict

The rain poured relentlessly over a decaying, neon-lit diner on the outskirts of Queens. Silas Sterling sat in a back booth, his expensive tailored coat entirely out of place amidst the peeling vinyl and smell of stale grease. He checked his diamond-studded watch, his lips curling in aristocratic annoyance.

The bell above the door chimed, and a man walked in. He was gaunt, his face weathered by years of harsh institutional living, and his clothes were cheap and ill-fitting. But the arrogant, bitter sneer on his face was entirely unmistakable.

Julian Vance slid into the booth across from the young billionaire.

"You’re late, Julian," Silas noted coldly. "I suppose federal prison doesn't instill a sense of punctuality."

"I spent eight years in a concrete box because of that woman," Julian rasped, his voice rougher, stripped of its former polished veneer. "I don't work on anyone's schedule but my own anymore. Why did you reach out to my parole officer? What do you want?"

"I want the same thing you want," Silas smiled, a predatory gleam in his eyes. "I want Emma Carter completely ruined. I want her dragged out of the Grand Lawson in disgrace, and I want her precious foundation liquidated."

Julian’s eyes narrowed. He had lost everything—his career, his wealth, and his freedom—because he had underestimated the terrifying intelligence of a former housekeeper. The hatred for Emma had kept him warm every single night in his cell.

"Aura opens next week," Silas continued, sliding a thick manila envelope across the table. "My algorithms will bleed her profits. But I need someone to destroy her pristine public image. I need a ghost. Someone who knows the vulnerabilities of the Grand Lawson’s staff, someone who knows how to manipulate the media, and someone who operates entirely off the books."

Julian opened the envelope. It was packed with stacks of untraceable, high-denomination bills. More money than he had seen in a decade.

"I want you to initiate a shadow campaign," Silas commanded. "Sabotage, deepfakes, coordinated media smears. I want her staff to doubt her, and I want the public to despise her. Make her empire burn from the inside."

Julian pocketed the envelope, a dark, vicious smile stretching across his face for the first time in years. "Consider it done."
