Chapter 27 - The Weakest Link

Julian froze, slowly turning around to face Emma. He was covered in grease and soot, his expensive Italian suit ruined by the grime of the sub-basement. In his right hand, he still clutched heavy-duty industrial wire cutters. The smug, aristocratic arrogance that usually defined his features was entirely gone, replaced by cornered, desperate panic.

"Get out of my way, Emma," Julian sneered, raising the heavy wire cutters like a weapon. "You have no idea what Victor Sterling will do to you. Vanguard doesn't just fire people; they destroy them."

"You severed the primary power lines to a building hosting four hundred people," Emma stated, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. "That is not corporate sabotage, Julian. That is domestic terrorism. The police are already on their way."

"You can't prove anything!" Julian shouted, taking a threatening step forward. "It’s my word against a glorified maid!"

"Actually," Daniel’s voice rang out from the darkness behind Emma. Daniel stepped into the light, holding a glowing tablet computer. "We can prove everything. You forgot that when Emma took over, she mandated the installation of independent, battery-operated micro-cameras in all critical infrastructure rooms. We just pulled the local drive. We have you on high-definition video smashing the generator panel, Julian."

Julian’s face drained of all color. The heavy wire cutters slipped from his grasp, clattering loudly against the concrete floor. He backed up against the rusted maintenance hatch, hyperventilating.

"Victor made me do it," Julian stammered, instantly turning on his employer to save his own skin. "He told me that if the gala was a success, the board might hesitate to sell. He ordered me to cut the power. I have the encrypted emails on my phone, Emma! I can give you Victor Sterling! Just let me walk away!"

Emma stared at the pathetic, trembling man before her. A year ago, Julian had treated her like absolute garbage in the lobby, mocking her poverty and threatening her livelihood. Now, he was begging for her mercy in a damp, freezing basement.

"I don't make deals with cowards, Julian," Emma said softly.

The heavy steel doors at the end of the corridor burst open. Four armed police officers, guided by the hotel’s security team, rushed into the sub-basement. They grabbed Julian, roughly securing his hands in steel cuffs.

As they dragged him away, Julian looked back at Emma, his eyes filled with absolute defeat. Emma didn't smile or gloat. She simply turned off her flashlight and walked back upstairs to finish managing her hotel. The battle in the basement was won, but the war for the Grand Lawson would be decided tomorrow morning in the boardroom.
