Chapter 26 - The Invisible Army

"Attention everyone!" Emma’s voice cut through the chaotic murmurs of the pitch-black ballroom. She didn't need a microphone; she projected her voice with the absolute, uncompromising authority of a leader completely in control of her domain. "Please remain seated. This is a temporary electrical fault. The Grand Lawson’s service will continue uninterrupted."
She clicked her radio. "Maria. Execute Protocol Illumination. Now."
For a few agonizing seconds, nothing happened. Richard Vance scoffed loudly in the darkness. "This is an absolute embarrassment, Ms. Carter! The board will have your resignation before midnight!"
Before Richard could finish his sentence, the heavy service doors to the kitchen burst open.
A breathtaking sight unfolded. Over one hundred members of the Grand Lawson’s staff—housekeepers, dishwashers, bellhops, and maintenance workers—marched into the ballroom in perfect, disciplined synchronization. Each employee carried two massive, ornate silver candelabras, fully lit with dozens of thick, brilliant pillar candles.
The staff fanned out seamlessly across the massive room, placing the candelabras at the center of every single dining table and along the grand staircases. Within sixty seconds, the pitch-black ballroom was transformed into an incredibly intimate, stunningly beautiful sea of warm, flickering candlelight.
The guests, initially panicked, suddenly broke into a massive round of applause. They thought it was a planned, dramatic shift in the evening's ambiance. The Mayor smiled, raising his glass in a toast to the incredible aesthetic choice.
Emma walked over to Richard Vance’s table, her face illuminated by the beautiful candlelight. "As I said, Mr. Vance. The service continues uninterrupted."
Richard stared at her, utterly speechless, entirely outmaneuvered by the sheer loyalty and resourcefulness of the hotel's working class.
Emma turned away and sprinted out the rear exit doors, plunging into the dark, labyrinthine service corridors. She had saved the gala, but she needed to catch the man who had tried to destroy it. She unclipped her radio. "Daniel. I’m heading to the subterranean electrical grid. Julian is down here. Seal the exits."
She navigated the pitch-black corridors entirely by memory, the tactical flashlight cutting a sharp beam through the darkness. She descended the concrete stairs to the sub-basement, the smell of ozone and burnt wires heavy in the damp air.

As she rounded the corner toward the main breaker room, she saw Julian frantically trying to force open a rusted maintenance hatch that led to the city sewers.
"It’s locked, Julian," Emma said coldly, stepping into the light.
