Chapter 32 - The Loyal Defector

The immediate aftermath of the Vanguard collapse was a whirlwind of triumphant chaos. News of Victor Sterling’s arrest dominated the financial networks, and the Grand Lawson’s stock prices—which had dipped during the takeover rumors—soared to unprecedented heights based on the sheer drama of their independent survival.
Emma didn't celebrate. She went straight back to the hospital.
For three agonizing weeks, Emma ran a billion-dollar empire from a small plastic chair beside Margaret Lawson’s hospital bed. She signed executive orders on a clipboard while holding the frail, unconscious woman’s hand.
On a rainy Thursday evening, Emma was quietly reading the quarterly projections aloud when she felt a faint, incredibly weak pressure against her palm.
Emma gasped, dropping the financial reports. Margaret’s eyes were slowly fluttering open.
"Margaret?" Emma whispered, tears instantly spilling down her cheeks. "Margaret, can you hear me?"
The older woman blinked, struggling to focus on Emma’s face against the harsh fluorescent lights of the ICU. A tiny, incredibly weak smile touched the corners of Margaret’s mouth.
"I... I can hear you, Emma," Margaret rasped, her voice barely above a whisper. "Did... did we lose the hotel?"
Emma laughed, a joyous, overwhelming sound, and gently squeezed Margaret’s hand. "No, Margaret. We didn't lose the hotel. We fought them off. The Grand Lawson is safe. The board surrendered. We won."
Margaret closed her eyes, a profound look of absolute peace washing over her frail features. "I knew you would... I knew you were the one. I chose... perfectly."
"You need to rest now," Emma cried softly. "You need to get your strength back. The staff misses you."
"My time is done, Emma," Margaret whispered, her breathing growing incredibly shallow. "I stayed... just long enough to know... the house was safe. It belongs to you now."
"Margaret, please don't talk like that," Emma pleaded, frantically pressing the nurse call button.
"Promise me," Margaret commanded, finding a final, desperate surge of strength to look Emma directly in the eyes. "Promise me... you will never let them change the heart of this place. Keep the doors open... keep treating them with dignity."

"I promise," Emma sobbed, kissing the old woman’s hand. "I promise you, Margaret. Forever."
Margaret Lawson smiled one last time. And then, the steady, rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor flattened into a long, continuous tone. The matriarch of the Grand Lawson was gone.
