Chapter 4 - The Breaking Point

The elderly woman did not flinch. She looked up at Victoria with clear, intelligent eyes that betrayed absolutely no fear.
"I said that you are holding up the line," the elderly woman repeated calmly. "Your wealth does not exempt you from basic human decency and manners. Please step aside."
Victoria let out a sharp, incredulous laugh. She looked around the lobby, seeking validation from the other wealthy patrons, but they simply watched in shocked silence.
"Do you have any idea who I am?" Victoria shrieked, all pretense of high-society elegance completely evaporating. "I could buy this entire hotel and have you thrown out onto the street! You pathetic, crippled old bat. How dare you speak to me?"
Emma’s hands tightened around her cleaning cloth. Her heart hammered against her ribs. Every instinct screamed at her to stay out of it, to look away, to protect her job. But she looked at the elderly woman, who reminded her so much of her own late grandmother, and a fierce, undeniable wave of protective anger washed over her.
"I know exactly who you are, Ms. Vance," the elderly woman replied, her voice remaining perfectly steady. "And your behavior is a disgrace."
Victoria completely lost control. Blinded by rage and entitlement, she took a threatening step forward, raising her hand high into the air. The heavy diamond rings on her fingers flashed dangerously under the crystal chandeliers. She was going to strike the old woman.
The guests in the lobby gasped. The receptionist yelled out.
But before Victoria’s hand could descend, a blur of black and white uniform darted across the marble floor.

Emma didn't think. She just moved. She stepped directly between the towering socialite and the wheelchair, throwing her arm up and catching Victoria’s wrist mid-swing. The impact sent a painful shockwave down Emma’s arm, but she did not let go.
"Do not touch her," Emma said, her voice shaking but filled with absolute, unyielding steel.
