Chapter 2 - The Approaching Storm

When Emma stepped out of the hidden service alcove and into the massive, echoing expanse of the main lobby, she immediately felt the tension in the air. The lobby was usually a place of hushed, refined murmurs, accompanied by the soft playing of a grand piano in the corner. Today, however, the atmosphere was tight, brittle, and vibrating with an ugly, chaotic energy.

Emma grabbed her cleaning supplies and hurried toward the concierge desk, keeping her eyes cast downward as she wiped up a spilled cup of expensive artisan coffee. As she worked, she could hear the sharp, aggressive clicking of designer heels striking the marble floor.

It was Victoria Vance. Every staff member at the Grand Lawson knew her name, and everyone dreaded her arrival. Victoria was a prominent socialite, the heiress to a massive shipping fortune, and a woman who wielded her wealth like a blunt weapon. She wore a stunning, fitted black gown, despite it being only two in the afternoon, and carried a leather handbag that cost more than Emma’s annual salary.

Victoria was furious. She marched toward the front desk, bypassing the velvet ropes that organized the queue.

"I explicitly requested the presidential suite to be ready by one o'clock," Victoria snapped, slamming her manicured hand onto the polished mahogany desk.

The young receptionist, looking terrified, typed frantically into his terminal.

"I apologize, Ms. Vance," he stammered. "The previous guests requested a late checkout, and housekeeping is currently preparing the room. It will be ready in exactly fifteen minutes."

"I do not wait fifteen minutes," Victoria hissed, her voice carrying across the quiet lobby, drawing the stares of several wealthy patrons. "Do you have any idea how much money my family spends at this establishment? I want the manager. Now."

Emma kept her head down, violently scrubbing the marble floor. She hated the way Victoria spoke to the staff, but it wasn't her place to intervene. She was just a maid. Her job was to clean the floor and disappear. But the universe had other plans.
