The Grand Lawson Hotel was not merely a place to sleep; it was a cathedral of modern luxury. Crystal chandeliers hung from the vaulted ceilings like frozen rain, casting a warm, golden glow over the polished marble floors. Every surface was immaculate, every detail meticulously curated to project absolute wealth and exclusivity. But this illusion of effortless perfection did not maintain itself. It was upheld by an invisible army of workers who arrived long before dawn, moving through the service elevators like ghosts.
Emma was one of these ghosts. Wearing a crisp, black-and-white uniform that felt more like a suit of armor, she pushed her heavy cleaning cart down the long, silent corridors of the twelfth floor. Her hands were calloused from harsh chemicals, and her back ached with a dull, familiar throb. She had been working at the Grand Lawson for three years, a job she desperately needed to keep her small apartment and pay for her younger sister’s university tuition.
She knew the unspoken rules of her profession perfectly. Do not make eye contact with the high-profile guests unless addressed. Always yield the right of way. Be entirely invisible. For three years, Emma had followed these rules flawlessly. She blended into the expensive wallpaper, an unseen force that ensured the sheets were tightly tucked and the mirrors were free of streaks.
As she finished polishing the brass handles of a suite, her radio crackled. It was Mr. Harrison, the floor manager, his voice dripping with his usual manic urgency.

Emma sighed, adjusting the collar of her uniform. She locked her cart and headed for the service elevator. She had no idea that her descent to the lobby would be the final time she ever rode in the service elevator, or that the next ten minutes would completely rewrite the trajectory of her entire life.
