Chapter 22 - The Wolf at the Door

The arrival of the Vanguard Hospitality acquisition team was not a subtle affair. They descended upon the grand lobby of the hotel like an invading army, flanked by sharp-suited lawyers and aggressive financial auditors. At the head of the phalanx was Victor Sterling, the ruthless CEO of Vanguard, known in the industry as a corporate butcher who specialized in gutting legacy hotels for their real estate value. Walking right beside him, wearing a bespoke Italian suit and an expression of pure, unadulterated vengeance, was Julian.
Emma stood at the top of the grand marble staircase, watching them approach. She wore a tailored navy-blue suit, her posture impeccable. She was no longer the frightened, overworked cleaner who had scrubbed the very steps she now commanded. She was the General Manager, and she absolutely refused to be intimidated.
"Emma Carter," Julian sneered as he reached the landing, looking her up and down with exaggerated condescension. "I must admit, I’m shocked you haven't burned the place to the ground yet. Giving dishwashers executive voting rights? It’s a miracle the hotel hasn't filed for bankruptcy."
"Our quarterly profits are up twenty-two percent, Julian," Emma replied smoothly, not breaking eye contact. "Which is significantly better than the negative margins you posted during your disastrous three months in the leadership program. To what do we owe the displeasure of this visit?"
Victor Sterling stepped forward, holding out a manicured hand. "Ms. Carter. I am Victor Sterling. We are here to conduct a preliminary structural and financial audit of the property, as authorized by your board of directors."
"The board of directors does not have the authority to permit external audits without the signature of the primary shareholder," Emma stated coldly, refusing to take his hand. "And Margaret Lawson has signed no such document."
"Margaret Lawson is currently under medical review by the board," Victor smiled, a predatory gleam in his eyes. "We have an emergency injunction from the state supreme court granting us full access to your operational servers. You can either hand over the access keys, Ms. Carter, or I can have federal marshals escort you out of the building for obstruction of a court order."
Emma looked at the legal document Victor handed her. The signature of the federal judge was authentic. The board had moved faster than she or Daniel had anticipated. They had legally bypassed Margaret.

"Daniel," Emma said quietly, turning to her colleague who stood fiercely by her side. "Escort Mr. Sterling and his team to the secondary conference room. Give them guest access to the servers. Nothing more."
As Julian walked past her, he leaned in close to her ear. "I told you I would be back, Emma. By the end of the month, you’ll be back to scrubbing toilets, and I will personally oversee the demolition of this pathetic hotel."
