Chapter 33 - The Ultimatum

The funeral for Margaret Lawson was the largest event the city had seen in a decade. Thousands of people attended—not just wealthy executives and politicians, but hundreds of housekeepers, bellhops, cooks, and maintenance workers. They stood in the pouring rain, mourning the woman who had built an empire, and the woman who had demanded respect for the working class.
Emma stood at the front of the cathedral, delivering the eulogy. She spoke not of Margaret’s immense wealth or her real estate conquests, but of her fierce, unyielding integrity. She spoke of the day Margaret had rolled her wheelchair into the lobby and demanded that Julian apologize to a frightened cleaner.
A week after the funeral, Emma was summoned to the downtown offices of Margaret’s estate attorneys for the official reading of the will.
Richard Vance and several members of the board of directors were also present, sitting nervously in the plush leather chairs. With Margaret gone, they assumed her fifty-one percent controlling shares would be divided among distant, wealthy relatives, allowing the board to eventually regain operational control of the hotel.
The head attorney, a solemn man with silver hair, unsealed the thick, wax-stamped envelope.
"The last will and testament of Margaret Eleanor Lawson," the attorney read aloud. "I, Margaret Lawson, being of sound mind, do hereby leave my vast collection of modern art to the Metropolitan Museum. I leave my private residences to my remaining nieces and nephews."
Richard Vance leaned forward eagerly.
"And regarding my controlling fifty-one percent voting shares in the Grand Lawson Hospitality Corporation," the attorney continued, adjusting his glasses. "I hereby transfer the entirety of these shares into an irrevocable, permanent trust."
Richard frowned. "A trust? Who is the executor of this trust?"
The attorney looked up, locking eyes with Emma. "The trust, and the absolute voting power of the fifty-one percent, is placed under the sole, lifetime control of Ms. Emma Carter."
The room erupted. Richard Vance jumped out of his chair, completely outraged. "That is impossible! You cannot give a billion-dollar corporate empire to a hotel manager! She isn't even family!"
"Margaret Lawson’s instructions are legally ironclad, Mr. Vance," the attorney stated firmly. "Ms. Carter is now the undisputed, controlling shareholder of the Grand Lawson. She has the authority to hire, fire, and completely restructure this board at her sole discretion."

Emma sat perfectly still, completely overwhelmed by the magnitude of Margaret’s final gift. She hadn't just given Emma a job; she had given her absolute, untouchable power.
Emma slowly stood up, looking at the furious board members. "Mr. Vance. I suggest you sit down. We have a lot of work to do."
