Chapter 10 - The Return to Reality

That evening, Emma unlocked the door to her small, cramped apartment on the outskirts of the city. The contrast between the glittering, crystal-draped lobby of the Grand Lawson and her peeling wallpaper was stark. The air here smelled of cheap cooking oil and damp concrete, a far cry from the signature lavender scent pumped into the hotel's ventilation system.
Her younger sister, Maya, looked up from a massive pile of medical textbooks scattered across the tiny kitchen table.
"You're late," Maya noted, taking off her reading glasses. "Did Harrison make you do double shifts on the top floors again?"
Emma dropped her keys into a ceramic bowl and collapsed onto the worn fabric sofa. "No. I... I think I met the owners of the hotel today."
She spent the next twenty minutes recounting the insane events of the afternoon. The screaming socialite, the old woman in the wheelchair, the intervention, and the arrival of Daniel Lawson.
Maya listened with her mouth slightly open, her eyes wide with shock. "Emma, are you insane? You grabbed a billionaire socialite by the wrist? You could have been sued into oblivion!"
"I didn't think about it," Emma confessed, rubbing her tired eyes. "She was going to hit an old lady. I just reacted."
"And they applauded you?" Maya asked, a slow smile finally breaking across her face. "The CEO said things were going to change?"
May you like
"That's what he said," Emma sighed heavily, staring at the ceiling. "But Maya, they're billionaires. They live in a completely different reality. By tomorrow morning, Daniel Lawson will have forgotten my name, and Mr. Harrison will probably find a reason to fire me quietly so he doesn't have to look at me."
Despite the applause in the lobby, Emma went to sleep that night convinced that miracles didn't happen to people like her. She set her alarm for 4:00 AM, fully expecting to be pushing her cleaning cart on the twelfth floor by dawn.
