Chapter 24 - Whispers in the Corridors

The news of the impending Vanguard buyout spread through the Grand Lawson like wildfire. By Wednesday morning, the atmosphere in the hotel had shifted from triumphant optimism to absolute, suffocating dread. The staff knew exactly what Vanguard’s reputation entailed. The culture of respect and dignity Emma had so carefully cultivated was suddenly standing on the edge of a sheer cliff.
Emma walked through the basement corridors, heading toward the laundry facilities. She didn't stay in her corner office; she needed to be visible, to show her staff that she had not surrendered.
"Ms. Carter?" a quiet voice called out from the shadows of the linen closet.
Emma turned to see Maria, the head housekeeper whom Emma had protected all those months ago. Maria looked terrified, clutching a stack of fresh towels against her chest.
"Maria, what is it? Are you alright?" Emma asked gently, stepping closer.
"They are already sabotaging us, Emma," Maria whispered, looking around nervously to ensure they were entirely alone. "Julian has been walking the floors at night. He’s bribing some of the newer staff members. Last night, the temperature controls in the wine cellar were manually overridden. We lost fifty thousand dollars' worth of vintage champagne. And this morning, the reservations for the Saudi royal family were mysteriously deleted from the primary database."
Emma felt a surge of cold fury. Julian wasn't just waiting for the board to sell the hotel; he was actively trying to destroy the Grand Lawson's current reputation to justify Vanguard's narrative that Emma was an incompetent manager.
"He’s trying to create a crisis before the board vote," Emma realized aloud. "If the hotel looks like it's falling apart under my leadership, the board will have even more ammunition to force the sale."
"People are scared, Emma," Maria said, tears welling in her eyes. "Julian told the kitchen staff that anyone who helps Vanguard now will be spared when the mass firings happen on Monday. He’s turning us against each other."

Emma reached out and gently squeezed Maria’s shoulder. "Julian only understands power through fear. But we built something stronger here. We built trust. I need you to gather the senior department heads. Do it quietly. Tell them to double-check every single system, every lock, and every VIP schedule. If Julian wants a war in the shadows, we will fight him with the light."
"We are with you, Ms. Carter," Maria nodded fiercely, wiping her eyes. "Every single one of us."
