Chapter 18 - The Frontline Solution

"Hector, it's Emma," she spoke rapidly into the radio, calling the head of the basement maintenance crew, a man she had shared coffee with dozens of times during her maid shifts.

“Go ahead, Emma,” Hector’s voice crackled back instantly.

"I need you to open the emergency reservoir valves in sub-basement C," Emma ordered. "Route the greywater bypass directly to the secondary laundry lines, and isolate the fresh water reserve tank to feed exclusively into Kitchen Pipeline A."

Julian stared at her in disbelief. "What are you talking about? There is no reserve tank for the kitchen."

"There is," Emma said, not looking at him. "The original blueprints from 1980 included a massive reserve tank for the rooftop pools that was never utilized. Maintenance uses it for pressure testing, but the water is perfectly potable. It holds five thousand gallons."

The Executive Chef’s eyes went wide. "Can you get that water to my sinks?"

“Copy that, Emma,” Hector’s voice returned over the radio. “Rerouting pressure now. Give it two minutes.”

Exactly two minutes later, the massive stainless-steel sinks in the industrial kitchen roared to life, blasting fresh, clean water. The catering team cheered, immediately springing back into chaotic, efficient action.

The gala was saved.

Daniel Lawson walked into the command center just as the water came back on. He looked at Julian, who was completely speechless, and then at Emma, who was calmly writing down a contingency schedule for the waitstaff.

"What happened here?" Daniel asked.

Mr. Harrison pointed a shaking finger at Emma. "She... she just saved the entire Gala, sir. She knew about a reserve tank no one else had on record."

Daniel looked at Emma, a profound smile of pride forming on his face. She wasn't just a brave maid anymore. She was exactly the leader his mother had predicted she would become.
