Chapter 45 - The Shadow in the Market

Despite the looming threat, Emily refused to keep her daughter locked away like a prisoner in a gilded cage. To maintain a semblance of normalcy, she frequently took Lily to the vibrant, bustling open-air markets of Coyoacán. The explosion of colors, the scent of fresh tamales, and the lively mariachi music provided a beautiful environment for the growing toddler.
It was a brilliant Tuesday afternoon. Emily pushed Lily’s stroller through the crowded aisles, casually examining the fresh produce. However, beneath her relaxed exterior, Emily was executing a meticulous counter-surveillance routine. She utilized the reflective surfaces of vendor stalls and the mirrored lenses of passing sunglasses to constantly monitor her six o'clock.
As she stopped to purchase a bag of fresh mangoes, the hairs on the back of her neck suddenly stood on end.
Her trained instincts flared. She glanced at the reflection in the vendor’s metal scale.
Thirty yards behind her, standing near a vibrant display of woven blankets, was a man who did not fit the environment. He was wearing a casual linen shirt, but his posture was overly rigid, intensely coiled. While the tourists were distracted by the sights and sounds, his eyes were locked entirely on Emily’s location.
Emily paid the vendor, offering a warm smile, and casually turned her stroller down a narrower, less crowded alleyway. She counted to fifteen in her head, then suddenly stopped and pretended to tie her shoe, using the opportunity to glance back.
The man in the linen shirt had followed her down the alley. He immediately stopped and pretended to inspect a rack of pottery, but his movements were unnatural and forced.
He isn't a tourist, Emily thought, her heart rate remaining perfectly steady. He has the cold, calculating eyes of a professional watcher.

Emily didn't panic. She didn't run. She calmly stood up, adjusted Lily’s sunhat, and tapped the discreet communication device disguised as an earring in her right ear.
"Arthur, Sarah," Emily whispered softly, her voice barely audible over the market noise. "I have a hostile tail. One male, linen shirt, athletic build. He has maintained visual contact through three sector changes. I am being hunted."
