Chapter 34 - The Wine Cellar Tunnel

Arthur immediately protested. "Emily, absolutely not! It is a suicide mission to walk out there alone. You are a civilian, not a trained operative!"
"I am a mother defending her child, Arthur," Emily shot back, her tone brooking no argument. "And I have been trained by the best operative I know: you. We don't have time to argue. If they breach the house, Lily is at risk. I have to cut the head off the snake."
Arthur stared into her eyes, seeing the unyielding, ferocious resolve of a woman who had fully embraced her own power. He knew he couldn't stop her. He nodded slowly, handing her two extra magazines and a flashbang grenade.
"Do not hesitate, Emily. Shoot first. Always."
"I know," she whispered, hugging him tightly.
Emily rushed to the back of the basement, pulling aside a heavy wine rack to reveal a crumbling, rusted iron door. The tunnel behind it was a remnant of the Cristero War, a forgotten escape route that led directly from the villa's foundation to an overgrown alleyway two blocks down the street.
She slipped into the damp, claustrophobic darkness, her flashlight beam cutting through the thick cobwebs. The air was stale and smelled of ancient earth. Above her, she could feel the faint vibrations of the heavy boots marching on the cobblestone streets.
It took her seven agonizing minutes to navigate the crumbling tunnel. She finally reached the rusted grate at the exit. Carefully, silently, she pushed the grate upward, peering out into the rainy, narrow alleyway.
The street was chaotic. Three heavy armored vans were parked near the villa's high walls, their engines idling loudly. Armed men were rushing toward the front gates, completely focused on the imminent breach.
But parked a block away, separated from the main assault force, was a sleek, black luxury SUV with satellite antennas mounted on the roof. It was heavily tinted and guarded by two massive mercenaries.

That was the command center. That was where Victor Sterling was hiding.
Emily climbed out of the grate, melting into the deep shadows of the alley. She pulled the black tactical mask over her lower face, gripping her weapon. The prey had officially become the apex predator.
