Chapter 28 - The Ghost of the Syndicate

The silence that fell over the courtyard was suffocating. The vibrant spring afternoon suddenly felt freezing cold. Emily stared at the photograph, her eyes tracing the unmistakable red crosshair drawn directly over her own smiling face in the image.
"They found us," Sarah whispered, her hands trembling slightly as she dropped her tablet onto the table. "How is that even possible? We wiped our digital footprints entirely. We used a dozen shell corporations to buy this villa."
Arthur picked up the photograph, his eyes scanning the angle of the shot, calculating the trajectory.
"The shot was taken from the bell tower of the old cathedral three blocks away," Arthur stated, his voice a lethal, vibrating growl. "It takes a highly specialized, military-grade telephoto lens to capture this level of detail through the tree canopy. This isn't a random cartel scout. This is a professional."
"But who?" Emily asked, forcing her voice to remain steady. She refused to let the old panic consume her. "Marcus is rotting in a federal penitentiary. His parents are disgraced and bankrupt. The Sterling empire was completely dismantled."
Arthur flipped the photograph over. Taped to the back was a small, sleek micro-SD card.
"Sarah, isolate a laptop from our main network and pull the data," Arthur ordered.
Sarah nodded, instantly shifting into her professional element. She ran into the villa and returned with a heavy, reinforced laptop. She disabled the Wi-Fi, booted up a secure sandbox environment, and plugged the drive in.
A single video file appeared on the screen. Sarah hit play.
The screen flickered, revealing a man sitting in a dark, opulent office. He possessed the same sharp, aristocratic features as Marcus, but his eyes were colder, darker, and entirely devoid of human empathy.
"Hello, Emily," the man on the screen said, his voice a smooth, terrifying drawl. "Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Victor Sterling. Marcus’s older brother. The brother the family sent away to handle the operations that required... a lack of morality."
Emily’s breath caught in her throat. She had never known Marcus had a brother.
"You destroyed my family, Emily," Victor continued, leaning closer to the camera. "You took our company, our wealth, and our legacy. But you made one fatal miscalculation. You assumed the monster you married was the most dangerous creature in the room. He wasn't. You have exactly forty-eight hours to transfer the Sterling trust funds back to my designated accounts, or I will turn your beautiful Mexican sanctuary into a slaughterhouse."
The video cut to black.
Arthur drew a suppressed handgun from his waistband, checking the chamber with a sharp, metallic clack.

"We are not paying him a single cent," Arthur said, looking at Emily.
"I know," Emily replied, her eyes hardening into polished steel. "We aren't running, either. Let him come."
