Chapter 29 - The Coyoacán Fortress

The decision to stay and fight fundamentally shifted the atmosphere of the villa. It was no longer a place of quiet retirement; it was a hardened bunker preparing for a siege.

Throughout the afternoon, Arthur systematically locked down the estate. The villa had been designed with an aesthetic focus on colonial beauty, but its bones were forged from modern military architecture. Arthur activated the secondary security protocols. Heavy, bullet-resistant steel shutters slid silently down from hidden compartments, sealing every window and door on the ground floor.

Emily stood in the nursery, looking down at her sleeping daughter, Lily. The baby was entirely oblivious to the storm gathering outside her window. Emily gently stroked Lily's soft cheek, feeling a fierce, primal surge of maternal protection ignite in her chest.

"I promised you that you would never know the fear I lived through," Emily whispered to the sleeping child. "And I will burn the world down before I let anyone break that promise."

She carefully lifted the sleeping baby and carried her down into the subterranean levels of the villa. The panic room was a masterpiece of survival engineering, equipped with independent air filtration, a reinforced titanium door, and enough supplies to last a month.

"Stay here, sweetie," Emily murmured, placing Lily into the secure crib and kissing her forehead.

Upstairs, the living room had been transformed into a tactical command center. Sarah was surrounded by four glowing monitors, typing furiously as she fortified the digital perimeter.

"I’m routing all our exterior camera feeds through a proxy server in Iceland," Sarah reported, not looking away from the scrolling code. "If Victor has a cyber team, I want to make sure they can't blind us before they breach the walls."

"What about local law enforcement?" Emily asked, stepping into the room and strapping a lightweight Kevlar vest over her shirt.

"Useless," Arthur scoffed, loading spare magazines and placing them on the heavy oak dining table. "Victor Sterling wouldn't operate in Mexico City unless he had already bought the local police commanders. If we call the authorities, they will either ignore the call or show up to help Victor wipe us out. We are entirely on our own."

"Good," Emily said, picking up a customized 9mm pistol from the table and checking the safety with practiced efficiency. Arthur had spent the last year teaching her how to shoot, refusing to let her remain defenseless. "I prefer it that way. No collateral damage. Just us and him."
