Chapter 21 - Survival Reflexes
"Emily, get down!" Sarah yelled through the earpiece.
Emily dove behind a stone souvenir stand just as silenced gunshots hissed through the air. Tourists began screaming and scattering in panic. Sarah drew her weapon and laid down covering fire, pinning the three mercenaries behind the wall of the grand cathedral.
Taking advantage of the chaos, Emily didn't run away. She crawled across the ground, reaching the fountain, and grabbed Mateo's leather briefcase, pulling it toward her. Her heart was pounding, but her mind was entirely devoid of fear. She had once been dragged across a floor by her abuser; these bullets could not make her back down. Clutching the briefcase tightly, she scrambled backward into the alley that Sarah had cleared.
