Chapter 5 - The Ghost at the Door

Chloe did not answer her mother. She stood perfectly still, a silent sentinel of truth.
Arthur bypassed his wife completely, walking with heavy, aggressive steps straight down the foyer. He grabbed the brass handle and yanked the heavy front door open.
A man stood on the porch.
He was tall, perhaps in his late fifties, wearing a dark, rain-soaked overcoat. His face was pale and weathered. He did not look like an arrogant, triumphant lover who had come to claim his prize. He looked profoundly exhausted, carrying the heavy posture of a man who had been running from his own shadow for far too long.
Arthur recognized him instantly. The air was sucked out of his lungs.
"Daniel?" Arthur breathed, his voice barely a whisper.

The entire house seemed to freeze. The ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway suddenly sounded like a deafening countdown.
In the living room, Evelyn squeezed her eyes shut. The ultimate, devastating secret she had buried for nearly two decades had just walked right up to her front door.
