Chapter 15 - The Departure

The sound of zippers closing and wheels rolling across the hardwood floor echoed in the quiet house.
Evelyn dragged her suitcases back to the front door.
When she reached the threshold, she turned around one last time. She paused, desperately waiting for something.
She waited for a look of pity. She waited for a glimmer of compassion. She waited for her husband to tell her they could work through it, or for her daughter to say she still loved her.
But she found absolutely nothing.
The faces of Arthur and Chloe were completely closed off to her. Because some wounds are cut so deeply into the soul that they cannot be healed by tears, apologies, or time.
Evelyn stepped out into the cold night. The heavy wooden door closed firmly behind her.
