Arthur drove back to the city alone, the silence in the car deafening.
When he unlocked the front door of their house, the quiet was absolute. There was no music playing from Chloe's room, no sound of the television in the living room.
He walked into the kitchen, turning on the small light above the stove.
It was lonely, yes. But it was not a tragic loneliness. It was the peaceful, satisfying quiet of a job flawlessly executed.
