Chapter 21 - The First Morning

The morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains of the kitchen, casting a warm, golden glow across the hardwood floors.
For the first time in eighteen years, Arthur woke up to a house that was entirely devoid of manipulation. There was no underlying tension, no walking on eggshells, and no theatrical sighs from the master bedroom.
He walked down the stairs, the wooden steps creaking in a familiar, comforting rhythm.
Chloe was already in the kitchen, wearing an oversized university sweatshirt, pouring two cups of dark roasted coffee. She looked up as he entered, her green eyes bright and remarkably clear.
"Good morning, Dad,"
Chloe smiled, sliding a steaming mug across the marble island.
"Good morning, sweetheart,"
Arthur replied, wrapping his hands around the warm ceramic.
He took a slow sip, looking around the kitchen. The remnants of the explosion from two nights ago had been entirely swept away. The shattered glass of the family photograph in the foyer had been cleaned up.
"It's quiet,"
Chloe noted, leaning against the counter.
"It is,"

Arthur agreed, a profound, unshakeable peace settling into his bones.
"It's a good quiet. The kind of quiet that lets you finally breathe."
