Evelyn moved into a cramped, one-bedroom apartment in a noisy, industrial part of the city. The women from her high-society book clubs had blocked her number the second the scandal of the fake pregnancy hit the rumor mill.
She sat on a cheap, secondhand sofa, staring at the peeling paint on the wall.
