Chapter 8

Chapter 8: Cutting the Chains
The restaurant manager, flanked by two towering, broad-shouldered security guards, finally reached the table. The manager’s previous fawning deference to David was entirely gone.
"Mr. Harrington," the manager said coldly. "We have received numerous complaints. Your violent behavior toward this lady is absolutely unacceptable. I must ask you and your mother to leave the premises immediately. The police are already on their way, as several of our guests have called them."
"You dare kick me out?!" David screamed, his panic melting into manic delusion. "I am your biggest VIP! I can buy this entire restaurant and fire you all!"
"You can't afford to buy a glass of tap water anymore, David," Elena noted drily. "Your black card was frozen by the bank exactly five minutes ago."
As if on cue, the waiter standing nearby holding the portable POS machine tried to run David's card for the open bottle of wine. A loud, sharp BEEP-BEEP of a declined transaction echoed through the quiet room.
David looked around wildly. Dozens of eyes from the city's elite were locked onto him. There was no admiration left. No fear. There was only absolute, unadulterated disgust for an abusive coward who had just lost his empire.

Maya slowly reached for her left hand. She slid off the massive diamond engagement ring and the platinum wedding band—the heavy, sparkling chains that had bound her to this nightmare. She dropped them onto the table. The precious metals clinked brightly against the glass of the wine bottle.
"The divorce papers will be delivered to whatever is left of your office tomorrow morning," Maya said, standing tall and smoothing down her ruined hair. "Keep whatever pieces of your life are left, David. Because from this moment on, you will never, ever have the power to hurt me again."
