Chapter 15 - The Weight of the Diamond

A week passed, and the dust began to settle. Maya found herself staring at the massive five-carat diamond engagement ring sitting on her dresser.
David had given it to her as a symbol of his ownership. He used to love parading it around, boasting about its clarity and cost. To Maya, it had always felt like a glittering handcuff.
She picked it up, placed it in a velvet box, and drove to the most exclusive jeweler in the city's diamond district.
The jeweler examined the stone through his loupe, whistling softly. "It is a flawless piece, Mrs. Harrington. I can offer you a very generous price for it."
"It's just Maya now," she corrected him. "And I don't want the money transferred to my account."
She handed him a card with the banking details of a local women’s shelter—a severely underfunded facility that helped victims of domestic violence escape their abusers.

"Transfer the entire sum there. Anonymously," Maya instructed.
Walking out of the jeweler’s shop without the heavy diamond on her finger, Maya felt her hands were finally her own. She had transformed the symbol of her captivity into a key for someone else's freedom.
