Chapter 14 - The Fall of the Queen

While David was being escorted away from the estate in the back of a police cruiser, his mother, Rebecca, was facing her own personal apocalypse.

Rebecca arrived at the prestigious Magnolia Country Club for her weekly bridge game, fully intending to pretend the incident at The Copper Lantern was just a misunderstanding. She wore her pearls and her brightest, most artificial smile.

But as she walked into the dining room, the silence that fell over the room was deafening.

Women she had known for decades, women who had kissed her cheek and drunk her champagne, suddenly found their teacups immensely fascinating. No one met her eyes.

She walked over to her usual table. It was occupied by three other socialites, but the fourth chair had been deliberately removed.

"Excuse me, Beatrice," Rebecca said, her voice wavering slightly. "I believe that is my table."

Beatrice, a woman with ice-cold blue eyes, looked up. "I'm afraid your membership is currently under review, Rebecca. The board had an emergency meeting this morning. We do not associate with families involved in public brawls and federal fraud investigations. It’s simply bad for the club’s image."

"You can't do this!" Rebecca gasped, her face flushing crimson. "I am a founding sponsor!"

"You were," Beatrice corrected sharply. "Security will escort you to your car. Please don't make a scene."

Stripped of her social standing, her wealthy friends, and her arrogant pride, Rebecca Harrington walked out of the club, utterly destroyed by the very elite society she had worshipped.
