Chapter 28 - The Gala of Light

To celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Aurora Initiative, Maya hosted a massive charity gala.

It was held in the grand ballroom of the city’s most prestigious museum. The room was filled with philanthropists, politicians, and the brave women who had graduated from her foundation’s programs.

Maya stood at the top of the grand staircase. She wore a stunning, backless gown of deep sapphire blue. She wore no heavy jewelry, no symbols of ownership. She wore only her confidence.

As she descended the stairs, the room erupted into applause.

She took the microphone on the stage. She looked out at the sea of faces, catching Julian’s proud smile, and her mother’s tearful, loving gaze.

"A year ago, I believed that my life was over," Maya addressed the crowd, her voice echoing beautifully through the hall. "I believed that I was destined to live in the shadows of someone else's cruelty."
