Chapter 7

Chapter 7: The Awakening
David stumbled backward. He spun around to look at Maya, who was still sitting in her chair, her hands covering her tear-stained face.
"Maya... Maya..." David practically fell to his knees beside her. The cruel, tyrannical monster had vanished, replaced by the pathetic, cowardly face of a drowning man grasping for a lifeline. He reached out, desperately trying to grab her hands. "Tell your mother! Tell her to stop it! I'm sorry, I just lost my temper! You know I love you, please, Maya, please..."
Maya slowly lowered her hands and looked down at him. Her eyes, which had always been so gentle, submissive, and yielding, now held a completely different light. It was the light of a profound awakening. She looked at his shaking hands—the exact same hands that had just violated her and displayed her pain for the world's entertainment.
A montage flashed through her mind: years of walking on eggshells, his controlling demands, the verbal abuse behind closed doors, and the endless tears she had swallowed to preserve the illusion of a "perfect" marriage.
Maya slowly, deliberately, pulled her hands out of his grasp. She placed her palms on the table and stood up under her own power.
"No, David," Maya said. Her voice was raspy from crying, but it possessed a newfound, unbreakable strength.

"Maya! Are you insane?!" Rebecca shrieked, slamming her hands on the table. "Do you want to destroy this family? Apologize to your husband and tell your mother to reverse this right now!"
Maya turned her gaze to her toxic mother-in-law. "You were right about one thing tonight, Rebecca. I did need to be educated. And the greatest lesson I learned tonight is that I have wasted my youth trying to please two monsters."
