Chapter 20 - The Deposition
The legal deposition took place in a sterile conference room in Victoria Sterling’s law firm.
Maya sat at the table, flanked by Victoria and Elena. Across from them sat David, looking haggard, unshaven, and defeated. He had a cheap, court-appointed lawyer beside him.
When it was time to testify about his assets, David tried to look at Maya, hoping to find a shred of the timid, compliant girl he had married. He tried to project his old intimidating glare.
Maya simply stared back, her expression completely indifferent. She looked at him as if he were a stranger. And to her, he was.
"Mr. Harrington," Victoria said sharply. "You are aware that the financial records subpoenaed by the SEC prove that you embezzled millions from your own employee pension funds to cover your gambling debts, correct?"

David swallowed hard, looking down at his trembling hands. "I plead the fifth."
Maya watched him break. The terrifying monster who had haunted her nightmares was just a pathetic, greedy man in a wrinkled suit. He had no power. He never really did. He only had the power she had allowed him to take.
