Chapter 9 - The Arrest

As the courtyard emptied of guests, the plainclothes agents moved in.
"Arturo and Beatriz Montes," Prosecutor Valdez said, approaching the couple. "We have warrants for the immediate seizure of all your personal electronic devices, corporate ledgers, and financial records. You will both need to accompany my agents to the precinct for questioning."
"I am calling my lawyers!" Arturo roared, furiously pointing a finger at the prosecutor. "You are making a massive mistake! I am a respected businessman!"
"Your lawyers are already waiting at the station, Mr. Montes," Valdez replied smoothly, unimpressed by the bluster. "And we will also be asking you about a widow in San Juan del Río."
Arturo’s face went completely slack. The mention of his past victims drained the last ounce of fight from him. He allowed the agents to escort him away without another word.
Valeria stood alone near the altar, shivering in her extravagant wedding dress. Two female agents approached her, gently but firmly asking for her mobile phone and purse.
She looked at Mateo one last time, her eyes pleading for a rescue that would never come.
Mateo turned his back on her, walking slowly down the aisle toward the front row.
He stood before his father.
Ramón looked up at his son. He saw the profound exhaustion in Mateo’s eyes, the heavy toll of carrying such a dark, agonizing secret for months just to protect their family.
Ramón reached into his pocket. He didn't pull out a tissue or a handkerchief.
He pulled out a small, worn velvet box containing Teresa’s original gold wedding band. He had brought it today, intending to give it to Mateo to pass on to Valeria as a symbol of welcoming her into the Cárdenas family.
Instead, Ramón placed the small box directly into Mateo’s palm and closed his son's fingers around it.
"True love doesn't need to hide fake papers, Mateo," Ramón whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

Mateo looked down at the ring, the last physical remnant of his mother's pure, uncomplicated love. The dam finally broke.
For the first time in months, Mateo cried. He wept not for the loss of Valeria, but for the betrayal of his trust. Ramón stood up and pulled his grown son into a fierce, protective embrace, standing together beneath the white roses of a dead wedding.
