Mateo, Ramón, and Julian stood on the high stone wall, completely drenched in sweat and river water, watching the beautiful, chaotic clash of elements.
The fire fought desperately, but it could not cross the flooded trenches. The ancient spillway created an impenetrable, watery shield across the entire northern border of the valley.
The local farmers cheered wildly, abandoning their tractors and rushing forward with shovels to beat out the remaining, isolated embers that had blown past the water line.
